If you want to work while you
are studying in the U.S. you should keep in mind that you must obtain work permission before beginning any employment, whether on campus or off campus. F-1 students are allowed to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session. They may also gain permission to work off campus, but only under special circumstances. Talk to the international student advisor for more information. To accept any kind of employment you must have a United States Social Security Card.
Because of a new regulation of the Social Security Administration, you must have been offered a job on campus before you can qualify for a social security card. To get a Social Security Card, follow these steps: - Go to the
Counseling and Career Services (CCS) Building.
- Pick out a job from the list. F-1 students can take only those jobs designated as "Budget" jobs. You may also work in the bookstore or the cafeteria.
- Apply for the job.
- If you get the job, take the job description to the International Students Center.
- Ask the international student advisor for a social security card letter.
- Fill out the social security card application form. The form is available in the International Students Center.
- Take the following documents to the nearest Social Security Administration office:
- Passport
- I-20
- I-94
-
Two
Letters:
One from the International Student Advisor and
One from the GCC Employee Services office
- Social Security Application form
There is a Social Security office close to the GCC campus in Glendale at
5907 W. Kings Avenue, which is between Greenway Avenue and Bell Road. The office is open during normal business hours. When you turn in your application form, the clerk will inspect your documents but will not keep them. You should get a receipt for your application. There is no charge for applying. In a couple of weeks
you will get your new card in the mail. The card will usually bear a notation that it is not valid for employment without
CIS (Citizenship and Immigration Service (INS) authorization. This simply means that you cannot take any job off campus unless you have special permission. |
