Student Goals: Career-related, General Studies, Transfer
The primary focus of biology is the study of life. This includes all living organisms from the smallest bacterium to the largest and most complex plants and animals. The technological impact of the biological sciences on society and the increasing responsibility of the scientist to our society require that a basic knowledge of biology should become a part of everyones education. Students take biology courses to:
  • Provide the Needed Background for careers in fields such as nursing, medicine, health, human services, nutrition, physical education, agriculture, or forestry. Nursing students, pursuing either the AAS degree or the transfer program to ASU West, must take several biology courses.
  • Prepare for a Biology Major at a four-year institution.
Those intending to transfer as biology majors should complete BIO 181 and 182 at GCC, but should consult the catalog of the transfer institution in selecting additional courses. Other recommended courses for potential biology majors are:
  CHM 151 General Chemistry I
CHM  151LL General Chemistry I Laboratory
CHM 154 General Chemistry II with Qual
CHM  154LL General Chemistry II with Qual Laboratory
One of the following math sequences is also recommended, depending on high school background and transferring institution:
MAT 151 General College Algebra/Function AND
  MAT 182 Plane Trigonometry OR
  MAT 212 Brief Calculus OR
MAT 220 Analytic Geometry and Calculus I AND
MAT 230 Analytic Geometry and Calculus II
  • Meet the general studies requirement in Natural Science. Most BIO courses meet this requirement for the colleges associate degrees. BIO 102 or 105 are especially recommended for students not majoring in biology. Transfer students should consult the catalog of the transfer institution for their general studies requirements.

Note: Students should consult with a department advisor in planning their academic schedule in order to complete degree requirements in an expedient manner. Required courses may not be available every semester or year. Due to limited course offerings, degree seeking students may find it necessary to extend completion time lines and attend both day and evening classes.
