Student Goals: General Studies, Career-related, Transfer

Chemists study the composition and chemical properties of substances as well as the process of chemical change. They search for new and improved ways of putting their knowledge to practical use and, as a result, affect the quality of our food, housing, medical care, environment, and most things that make our lives better. Chemists are employed in a variety of fields not traditionally considered as "Chemistry", e.g., material science, energy conversion, and environmental control. Related careers are halth care, food science, industrial sales, pharmaceuticals, engineering, medicine, agricultural products, etc.

Continuing concerns about energy sources, human health, and the environment as well as the need for new materials for improved technology have resulted in a sstrong demand for chemical research. There is a stable demand for industrial and for analytical chemists at the BS and MS levels and for chemists with biomedical interests.

Transfer Program: Students intending to major in chemistry should regard this program as a guide for preparing to transfer to a baccalaureate degree granting institution. The program is designed to generally parallel the first two years of course work required by most four-year institutions. For individual requirements at specific institutions, the student should consult with a Chemistry Department advisor.

Transferability: All courses transfer. (ASU accepts CHM235, 235LL, 236, and 236LL to fullfill the program requirement of one year of organic chemistry. However, the credits are recorded as lower division rahter than upper division credits.)

Special Skill Levels Needed: College level reading and writing skills. MAT 151, College Algebra/Functions, and MAT 182, Plane Trigonometry, or the equivalent of 4 years high school math.

Departmental Recommendations: Credits
+CHM  151 General Chemistry I 3
+CHM  151LL General Chemistry I Laboratory 1
+CHM 152 General Chemistry II
CHM 154 and 154LL are preferred at ASU

General Studies Recommendations:
Individual universities may require foreign language (German sometimes preferred). Others accept computer literacy to fulfill the language requirement. In any case, computer courses are strongly recommended.
+ Indicates that course has Prerequisites.
