| Student Goals: General Studies, Career-related
The objectives of the speech program areas are: to provide individual courses as electives in other programs; to satisfy requirements prescribed by programs in other areas; and to provide lower division courses for students who major or minor in speech. The courses in speech are organized to meet practical needs of the students. Students planning careers in law, education, the ministry, salesmanship, and communications will find speech courses valuable and generally required in upper division study. Speech majors and minors are encouraged to participate in the activities program; however, these events are open to all students.
A recent national survey of college graduates with majors or minors in speech revealed that they hold positions in education, law, the ministry, sales and marketing, information services, public relations, advertising, government, social service, industrial and labor relations, and fund raising. Others are now in mass communication: radio, TV, and film.
Note: Students should consult with a department advisor in planning their academic schedule in order to complete degree requirements in an expedient manner. Required courses may not be available every semester or year. Due to limited course offerings, degree seeking students may find it necessary to extend completion time lines and attend both day and evening classes. |
