Mathematics courses at Glendale Community College serve students who intend to major in mathematics at a four year institution, students who need these courses in preparation for other careers, and students choosing them for personal interest. Students intending to pursue a baccalaureate degree in mathematics should consult with a departmental advisor to plan their program.

Mathematicians engage in a wide variety of activities ranging from the creation and relating of new theories to solving of simple or complex numerical problems. Some graduates engage in mathematics for money, some for humanitarian purposes, and some simply because they find it beautiful.

At a time when most job markets are tight, mathematicians can limit their career opportunities by failing to explore available options. Teaching and research are but two of a long list of possibilities. Related careers are applied mathematics, computer research and programming, biomedical engineering, accounting, pure mathematics, systems analysis, economics, physical and life science, statistics and actuarial professions.
