Placement Reviews

Before taking any of the Math placement tests, it is strongly recommended that you first spend time preparing for the test.  Our goal is to help you succeed the first time that you enroll in a math course and assessment of what you currently know is a very important part of helping you succeed.

We also understand that while you might have successfully completed math courses in the past, some of the necessary skills and concepts might be a bit rusty. An organized review before taking the math placement test will not only help determine the best placement for you, but it will help you be ready to learn the new concepts when you do enroll in the math course.

The following review options are available:

These options do not replace the actual placement test.

When you are ready to take the GCC ALEKS Placement Test, printout the first page from the ALEKS PracticeExam (see below) and take it with you to the GCC Testing Center. Your scores are good for 1 year from the date of testing. Visit GCC's Testing Services for information. If you have any questions, please contact the Mathematics Department at 623.845.3655.

Free ALEKS Practice Exams:

The ALEKS website provides you the opportunity to take a practice test. You will be able to see and work sample questions, practice entering your answers, and see how your diagnostics will look when you finish your test. However, you will not be able to see which problems you answered correctly.

Here are the steps to get to the practice tests:

  • Go to www.aleks.com and sign up for a FREE Trial in the Higher Education area located in the lower left corner of the page. Choose the EXPERIENCE ALEKS AS A STUDENT option and click TRY ALEKS NOW .

  • Your computer will automatically be checked for the needed plug-ins and will install them if they are not already present. After installation of the ALEKS plug-ins, EXIT the browser and then reopen it. You do not have to restart your computer. If you need technical help please contact the ALEKS help located at http://www.aleks.com/faqs .

  • When you are back on the ALEKS website and have "clicked - through" to where you left off before the plugin installation - you DO NOT have to fill out the form you will see on the screen. Instead click the please visit the Free Trial for Independent Users link. Choose the EXPLORE STUDENT MODULE option and click TRY ALEKS NOW .

  • Complete the short form Enter Your Personal Information (Name , email, Higher Education/Math) and then select one of the levels of testing:
          Prep for Beginning Algebra
          Prep for Intermediate Algebra
          Prep for College Algebra
          Prep for Precalculus
          Prep for Calculus

    and then click CONTINUE .

  • A Guest Account will then be created with a username and password. Write them down if you want to come back and access ALEKS again. Then click CONTINUE TO FREE TRIAL.

  • The ALEKS demonstration, tutorial and practice test will be displayed.

Follow the directions carefully. You can stop the practice exam at any time and view the sample of the test results. Remember, the results are not your results but are provided to allow you to see what your results will look like when you do take your exam.

ALEKS Learning Modules (Tutorials):

ALEKS has developed many learning modules that are aligned with the course for which you would like to prepare. The cost is $30 for a 6 week access to the material which can be paid by either a credit or debit card. The modules are
  • Prep for Beginning Algebra
  • Prep for Intermediate Algebra
  • Prep for College Algebra
  • Prep for Precalculus
  • Prep for Calculus

It is suggested that you select the Prep for the course level you would like to test into and then work to a minimum of 80% proficiency. For example, if you want to test into College Algebra then purchase the Prep for College Algebra and work to at least 80% proficiency. Note : ALEKS's Beginning Alegbra is MCC's Introductory Algebra

MyMathTest:

MyMathTest is a FREE online tool created by the same publishers that created MyMathLab. It can be used to refresh your math skills. Before you begin, be sure you have:

A valid email address
This student access code: WSSMMT-PLUNK-ELAND-PYDNA-GUYOT-GIBES
This Program ID number: XL0O-T1AG-801Y-3EV2

Note: 0 is the number zero and O is the letter O. You can copy and paste this into MyMathTest to avoid this issue.

To register go to www.mymathtest.com and click the Register button for students.

Refer to the instructions document for more specific information about using MyMathTest.

If you are using a computer off-campus (at home or work) you will need to have administrative access and be connected to the Internet so you can install the necessary plug-ins. (If you're not sure whether your computer meets the system requirements, go to www.mymathtest.com , and then click Support -> Browser Check , or call Customer Technical Support at 1-800-677-6337).

Practice Problems:

The following links contain problems (and answers) that are similar to the types of questions that are on the placement tests.  The actual placement tests are different from the practice tests.

To prepare for the placement tests, print out one of the following PDF files. Each of these files contains practice multiple choice questions, followed by an answer key.

Another way to prepare is to take the Online Course Placement Test.

The Online Test is timed, therefore you may not finish all of the questions.  This Online Test contains fewer problems than the tests in the PDF files posted above.  When you finish the Online test, you can review the correct answers and get an indication of which Math class you may be placed in.

Review previous course materials:

If you have already taken an ALEKS Math Placement Test, you received a list of suggested topics for review along with your test results. You can use the suggested review topics to guide your review through a textbook from a previous class. If you have not taken an ALEKS test then you can still review tests, homework, and the textbook from courses you have taken previously.

***Practice Exams and Reviews do not replace the actual placement test.
