Dear High School Principal/Educator:

Educational institutions at all levels are being challenged to come up with assessment and evaluation plans that will realistically assess student learning.  Much discussion, debate, and controversy is centered on high stakes testing and paper and pencil testing in general as the only method of determining whether a student is learning.

The concepts and practices of learning by leveraging multiple intelligences and learning for understanding (MI/LfU Program) is one approach that a group of dedicated faculty, staff and students have been focusing their efforts for the past nine years.  The MI/LfU Program at Glendale Community College has received national and international acclaim for its contribution to the areas of creative student learning, learning for understanding, and alternative assessment and evaluation.

Recognized by Howard Gardner as "pioneers in applying MI at the higher education and adult levels of learning," the faculty would like to invite you and a group of faculty to participate in the First Annual Multiple Intelligences/Learning for Understanding High School Institute on Saturday, October 25, 2003.  The all-day event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the GCC campus.  It will be the beginning of an important dialogue and sharing between both groups of faculty.  Your role in identifying master teachers from your district/school is critical to our discussion of how your students learn.  We encourage you to explore the possibility of this day serving as an in-service day for your faculty as well.

We look forward to your response in order to plan accordingly for you and your teachers to join us on October 25.  Registration is limited to 150 participants.  For more information,  please call 623.845.3177.

Best wishes for a wonderful year.

Sincerely,

Phillip D. Randolph, Ed.D.
