Ms. Schiedat was born on May 20,1943 in Chicago Illinois and moved to Phoenix in December of 1951. She graduated from Washington High School in 1961, received her Bachelors in Education with major in English & minor in French in 1965 and her Masters in English in 1968, both from from Arizona State University ASU). She served as both a Teaching Assistant and an Instructor of English from 1965 to 1971 in ASU's English Department. Ms. Schiedat first became involved in the MI/LfU program in Fall 2002, implementing the MI/LfU in her ENH 110, Introduction to Literature course. Her view of MI/LfU:
"The educational benefits of MI/LfU are that the students must study the literature very thoroughly on their own in order to present their Learning Option. Students have the opportunity to discover new intelligences that they were not aware of having. In addition, students learn the subject more deeply by using an intelligence other than linguistic to present the literature, and they own the literature and the Learning Option when they have completed it. The Learning Option allows me to assess the students' understanding more deeply than I can on the regular tests in the course.
Insights that I have gained from
teaching in MI/LfU Program are that students learn on a deep level, gain
additional self-esteem from doing their Learning Options, and can apply
the literature to life situations. They are very interested in each
other's presentations in class. In my classes, 99% of the students have
stated that they have enjoyed and benefited from the MI/LfU learning experience.
No one has yet issued a dire complaint. Students feel challenged by MI/LfU
learning opportunities. I highly recommend the program!"
Marilyn will be presenting the session, "The Sky's the Limit in Literature!"
