The Psychology Department developed the Developmental Disabilities Specialist Certificate Program in 1998 to meet some of the occupational training needs of caregivers working in the field of developmental disabilities. It also was developed to meet some of the needs of parents and family members living with a child or adult with a disability. This training program is unique in that it is one of only a handful in the country!

PROGRAM EMPHASIS: This program emphasizes practical skills, hands-on training, and functional information. Internship opportunities and courses taught by experienced professionals in the field add to the practical value of the program. Individuals interested in working in the field of developmental disabilities can gain valuable skills and knowledge, along with a credential to present to potential employers. Those already employed in the profession can broaden their skills, while creating new opportunities for advancement. Parents of children with disabilities can increase their skills for teaching new behaviors and for eliminating unsuitable behaviors and can also gain valuable resource information.

PROGRAM CONTENT OVERVIEW: The certificate program consists of thirteen (13) core credits and a minimum of three (3) credits of electives. Some classes may be taken concurrently and the program finished in two semesters or classes may be taken one at a time over several semesters.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES: Students wishing to take the internship are required to contact Program Director Susan Karpinski. Opportunities for internship placement are varied and range over the Valley. The placement of an intern at a particular site depends upon the student’s personal career interests, schedule, and travel concerns as well as the needs of the intern sites. Placement opportunities exist in rehabilitation programs (individual home, day care, residential, workshop, and community work settings), educational programs (special education and integrated education programs), and State programs (case management and community resource aide).

INSTRUCTORS: Instructors for the courses are Masters and Ph.D. professionals who have had years of practice in the field of Developmental Disabilities. Instructors bring their experience in this field into the classroom to enhance the learning process.

PROGRAM COORDINATOR: Susan Karpinski, M.A., is coordinating the Developmental Disabilities Certificate Program. She has over 25 years experience working in the field of developmental disabilities from direct care to directing agencies. She has held management level positions for community mental health systems, schools, and various non-profit agencies. Her educational background in psychology specialized in applied behavior analysis and school psychology. She has been teaching at Glendale Community Colege since 2001.
