Greetings,

Approved Faculty Senate Minutes February 24, 2000

I. General

A. President Jim Reed called the meeting to order at 2:35PM.

Present: Senators: Freddie Anttila, Carmela Arnoldt, Rod Brooker, Jim Daugherty, Paul

DePippo, Gay Garesche, Jack Haughn, Pat Haas, Trish Hofer, Michael Holtfrerich, Phil Moloso, David

Raffaelle, Linda Smith.

Absent: Renee Barstack, Larry Bohlender.

Visitors: Including, but not limited to, Jane Camp, Betsy Cooper, Bill Stewart, Joy Wingersky.

B. Moloso moved (Dudley second) approval of the agenda with change to allow Betsy Cooper to

speak immediately. PASSED. Cooper requested money for Student Recognition Day awards. Moloso

moved ( Dudley second) approval of an amount up to $1500. PASSED.

C. Moloso moved (DePippo second) approval of the 1/27/00 minutes. PASSED.

D. Treasurer Moloso reported a balance of $14,066.92.

II. Old Business

A. Campus Communication: Daugherty said some people want Dr Pollack removed. Garesche asked

to note that she "has never stated an intention to have Dr Pollack removed and resents implication of

such." Garesche presented the sub-committee's letter of response to Dr Cardenas and the Board:

"The GCC Faculty Senate is grateful for the Chancellor and Board's attention to our letter dated October

6th, 1999. We welcome the mediation of an external party like the NCA, suggested in the Chancellor's

January 13, 2000 letter of transmittal of Dr. Pollack's response.

There are numerous clarifications and corrections that could be made to the statements in Dr. Pollack's

letter; however, only two will be made here.

First, the Senate and the faculty it represents would like to register its shock and chagrin that Dr. Pollack

chose in her response to impugn the integrity of the current Board president. Additionally, Dr Pollack is

is mistaken in alleging that the Faculty Association was fined in connection with Board Member Eastin's

election campaign. It was, in fact, the Faculty Political Action Committee (FACPAC) which was fined.

The FACPAC has been in hiatus since that election and, therefore, cannot have had anything to do with

the GCC faculty/adminstration communication problems.

Second, Dr Pollack is mistaken about the Senate's vote to send the letter dated October 6, 1999,

indicating that it passed by a single vote. In fact, the vote was eight yeas, four nays and one abstention;

hence, it passed by a significant margin."

Moloso moved (Haughn second) to adopt the letter as distributed and that it be sent as addressed. Hofer

moved (Daugherty second) to table the motion. FAILED: 9/4. YEA: Arnoldt, Daugherty, Hofer,

Smith. Original Motion Amended: Adopt the letter as amended

(** final version) and that it be sent. PASSED. NAY: Arnoldt, Haas.

**Dear Dr. Cardenas and Members of the MCCCD Board:

The GCC Faculty Senate is grateful for the Chancellor and Board's attention

to our letter dated October 6th, 1999. We welcome the mediation of an

external party like the NCA, as suggested in the Chancellor's January 13, 2000

letter of transmittal of Dr. Pollack's response.

There are numerous clarifications and corrections that could be made to the

statements in Dr. Pollack's letter; however, only two will be made here.

First, the Senate and the faculty it represents would like to register its

shock and chagrin that Dr. Pollack chose in her response to impugn the

integrity of the current Board president. We emphasize Mr. Eastin had no

part in any of the incidents enumerated in the October 6th letter, nor has

he participated in any deliberations of the current GCC Faculty Senate.

Second, Dr Pollack is mistaken about the Senate's vote to send the letter dated October 6, 1999,

indicating that it passed by single vote. In fact, the vote was eight yeas, four nays, and one abstention;

hence, it passed by a significant margin.

Thank you for considering our concerns,

James W. Reed, Ph.D., GCC Faculty President

On behalf of the GCC Faculty Senate

B. AAUP Letter: Reed sent letter to AAUP on 2/22/00. Garesche moved (Brooker second) that we

provide the AAUP with the requested information to this time. We will ask that this information be

confidential. Dudley moved (Hofer second) to table the Motion. FAILED. 7/6. Yea: Arnoldt,

Daugherty, Dudley, Haas, Hofer, Smith. NAY: Anttila, Brooker, DePippo, Garesche, Haughn,

Holtfrerich, Moloso. Abstain: Raffaelle. Original Motion: PASSED. NAY: Daugherty, Dudley, Hofer,

Smith.

C. Dual Enrollment: Reed and Garesche reported that students will have to pay for courses. A

"wash" will no longer be accepted. Garesche and Al Shipley presented concerns about dual enrollment

to the Governing Board at a Work Study Session on Tuesday, February 8. Carl Samuels and Larry

Burgess presented data on quality of courses taught by Residential and Adjunct faculty. The Chancellor's

ad hoc Committee on Quality (six faculty on committee) met.

D. Nominating Committee: Wingersky spoke about nominations for Senate elections, and Haas

distributed flyers calling for nominees.

III. New Business

A. Commencement Speaker: Reed to seek a candidate for Faculty Comment.

B. AGEC and Advisement: Smith raised concern about differences among campuses about

differences in advising students to AGEC, rather than individual student interests. Reed and DePippo

stated this topic is on the President Executive Committee's agenda for Friday, 2/25/00.

C. President’s Reception: Reed distributed copies of tentative program for evening of May 12 and

the Nomination Form for the 1999/2000 Outstanding Graduate.

D. Expression of Concern to Dr. Pollack: Move by acclamation for GC Senate to express concern to

Dr. Pollack's about her husband's surgery and recovery.

IV. Information

A. College-Wide Assessment: Raffaelle stated a need for 120 students to take exit competency test

for statistical validity.

B. Misrepresentation: Daugherty stated that his email addressed Garesche's interpretation of Senate's

debate and action regarding a request for action from Faculty Executive Council (FEC) about Dr

Pollack's letter of rebuttal to the Governing Board. According to Daugherty, official FEC minutes

suggest Garesche misspoke about Reed's "mistaken statement."

Next meeting March 23, 2000.

Adjournment by acclamation at 5:10PM.

Respectfully submitted,

Carmela Arnoldt
