Student Goals: Personal, General Studies, Career-related
Sociology courses systematically examine social behavior and human groups, particularly the influence of culture, socialization, social structure, stratification, social institutions, differentiation by race, ethnicity, gender, age, class, and socio-cultural change upon people's attitudes and behavior.

Soc 101 (Introduction to Sociology) introduces basic sociological concepts and processes.

Soc 212 (Women and Men in a Changing Society)
Soc 251 (Social Problems)
Soc 253 (Social Class in America)
to meet GCC's Social and Behavioral Science requirements
All Sociology courses meet this requirement for the three Associate Degrees offered at GCC. Soc 101 is particularly recommended as the initial course.
to meet Arizona universities global awareness requirements
Students must satisfy two awareness areas: cultural diversity in the United States and either global awareness or historical awareness. Select Sociology courses meet this requirement for the three associate degree programs at GCC.
as needed background for other careers
Soc 101 (Introduction) is required in GCC's Human Services AAS program. In addition, several other Sociology courses are either required or may be selected as electives in that program. Soc 101 is also recommended for the Nursing transfer program to ASU and for Pre-law students. Sociology courses are also recommended for those intending to pursue careers in social services, the health professions, gerontology, business (especially the non-profit sector), justice studies, public administration, census and market research, education, and urban and rural community planning and development.
to prepare for a major in Sociology at a four-year institution
Soc 101 (Introduction) and up to three other Sociology courses are recommended for transfer students. All Sociology courses will transfer to Arizona colleges and Universities. A broad background in the social sciences will be of value. In addition, statistics and research methodology is required for a baccalaureate degree.
