Server
Side Includes
Server Side Includes (SSIs) provide information
from the server into your HTML document. Popular examples of SSIs
are to use a tag to update the date a page was last modified, or to display
the URL of the page. GCC's Syllabus Templates for the Web use the
include
SSi to display the contents of one file in another, giving the appearance
of frames, without using frames.
Server Software
and Other Server Considerations
-
In order for SSIs to
be recognized, the server needs to be configured to allow SSIs. Not
all server software supports SSIs. Check with your web administrator
to ensure SSIs can be used on your server.

Using Templates
-
GCC has had considerable success with syllabus
templates created by our web/graphics designer (Bobby Sample). Bobby
created the templates balancing ADA issues (text reader software) and good
graphics design elements.
-
GCC's network has a "Shared" drive that all
administrative accounts have access to. The templates are available
on this shared resource. Faculty copy the templates to their desktops,
edit them for their individual syllabi, and post them in their web folders.
-
Of interest is the fact our network is set
up so each account can have their own web space simply by creating a "public.www"
folder and placing their webpages in this folder.
Training on
Templates
-
Training has been successful via scheduled
workshops where faculty copy information from their existing syllabi into
the templates.
-
Other faculty have been successful using the
written materials and working on the templates individually.
