Student government creates active social atmosphere

For many here at Glendale Community College (GCC), everything that seems to be fun is taking a toll on your wallets. GCC has a lot of fun activities for just being a student at the college.

Shawn Sanchez the public relations aide in the student government here at GCC said they definitely have a big list of fun social events.

On Feb. 4 they hosted "The battle of the sexes," which had free rock climbing, boxing, jousting and sumo wrestling and free drinks.

Later that night they had video games in the student union with over 40 people in attendance. The Student Union had many game systems such as a Play Station 3, Nintendo 64 and Xbox 360.

On Feb. 5 Student Government also held a "winter ball" with a DJ included, all for free for enrolled students.

Sanchez said, "The reasons why we are doing all these events are because we want to get the students to be more social and for them to recognize student government and all that we do for Glendale community college."

Not only did they create a great time for all students to meet other people but saved fellow GCC students from paying 9.50 to go to the movies. On March 5 the student government will also be hosting a "battle of the bands." There will be six bands such as Ashes to Phoenix, Etc., The Tryout, Glory, Glory, Gloria, The Hostage Situation and many more. The audience declares the winner. The "Battle of the Bands, "will be held in the amphitheatre from 5 to 10 p.m.

Matt Castner, public relations officer, said, "Everyone treats this thing as a pit stop to a university, as if were only going to be here for two or three years. Why not, since we have the money, do crazy over the top fun activities?"
