NJCAA Hall-of-Game coach Dave Grant and his Gauchos' baseball squad played their first home game February 1st against conference rival South Mountain.
Two days previous, the Gauchos had defeated the same Cougars team 12-2. If Glendale was expecting another easy victory, they were sorely disappointed.
The Cougars struck quickly, putting up two runs in the first two innings for a 2-0 lead.
Glendale played a much more composed game the rest of the way, allowing just one more run over the final seven innings. Coach Grant complimented his pitching staff, saying, "I thought we pitched well in th sense that they (South Mountain) could have done some serious damage. We executed and showed poise early."
Sophomore Chase Lehr started on the mound for Glendale, going six solid innings and accumulating five strikeouts before being relieved by freshman Pedro Ramos.
Ramos had one strikeout in four innings, but came away with the win, thanks to a Gauchos comeback.
Sophomore Daniel Anguiano was the hard hitter for Glendale, batting 2 for 5 (one single and one double), finishing with one RBI.
Sophomore Brandon Beal also batted 2 for 5, and sophomore Thomas deAngelis was 2 for 4.
With a favorable early schedule against beatable opponents at home, Glendale hopes to get off to a fast start in the ACCAC.
