GCC’s Physical Graffiti presents ‘A Purely Human State’

Cem Burnham Dance concert titled “A purely human state” will be held Dec. 3 and 4 at 7:30 p.m.. The performers will be GCC’s student dance company Physical Graffiti. The company will be performing works by Brad Garner, GCC faculty member, Andrea Chesley, ASU dance student and former GCC student, both winners of the Arizona Choreography Competition 2004, and other faculty and students. Dancers will be performing in the modern dance style. Different costumes will also be featured, ranging from traditional leotards to costumes resembling bikinis and rags. Dancers will also be performing solo and in duets. Dance company members auditioned for a place in the company before school began. Open auditions were held about four weeks after that. Physical Graffiti members are considered to be very skilled dancers, recognized statewide and nationally. Their repertoire includes modern, jazz and ballet. They rehearse a couple of hours everyday and also are required to take specific classes in addition to their other academic classes. The members are very serious about dance and plan to have careers related to dance. Lenna De Marco, a GCC faculty member and dance professor, chose the name for the dance concert from a book of dance quotes and poetry. She felt that dance truly is “a purely human state” since it uses the human body. Another performance of the dance concert will be held in March at the Herberger Theater in a gala performance. The four winners of the 2004 Arizona Choreography Competition will be showcased. It will also be televised on access cable. “We have very strong dancers at professional levels.,” De Marco said. “People will be surprised. It’s something anybody could come to and enjoy.” The dance concert will be held in the Performing Arts Center. Ticket prices are $7 for general admission and $5 for students, seniors and faculty.
