Web Management Authority
This topic, as part of the Danger in the Construction Zone session of WebDev 2000, addressed the following opposing points of view:
Centralized Web Management vs. Distributed Web Management
First, a debate was presented by Karen Schwalm and Bobby Sample, both of the GCC Innovation Center.
- Bobby argued for Centralized Web Management: the practice of restricting an institution's web publications to the approval of an executive body or appointed committee, as with most corporate web sites.
- Karen defended Distributed Web Management: the principle established at Glendale Community College and at some other locations in the Maricopa Community Colleges system, wherein diversity reigns and marketing is only one of many competing priorities.
As in all of the Danger debates, the presenters were not necessarily arguing their own personal points of view. Their priority was to inform the audience of the opposite sides of this issue, through extemporaneous speech and role playing.
Following the presentation, the attendees were asked to discuss and compose "calls to action" that would lead to the resolution or to greater understanding of this issue.
