ADA Compliance Issues
This topic, as part of the Danger in the Construction Zone session of WebDev 2000, addressed the following opposing points of view:
Accessibility for All vs. Technological Freedom
First, a debate was presented by Carol Myers and Elliot Cherner, both of the Matrix team at the Maricopa District Support Services Center.
- Elliot argued for Accessibility for All: the movement toward applying ADA compliance to the Web, wherein on-line information is compatible with equipment for the sight impaired and other users who are disadvantaged by some popular forms of Internet delivery.
- Carol defended Technological Freedom: the use of various graphical programs and browser plug-ins which do not necessarily attend to accessibility standards on the Web.
As in all of the Danger debates, the presenters were not necessarily arguing their own personal points of view. Their priority was to inform the audience of the opposite sides of this issue, through extemporaneous speech and role playing.
Following the presentation, the attendees were asked to discuss and compose "calls to action" that would lead to the resolution or to greater understanding of this issue.
