ADA Compliance Issues:
1. What Do We Need To Learn?

The ADA Compliance Issues topic was introduced with a debate on Accessibility for All vs. Technological Freedom, followed by teams of conference attendees providing the ideas that follow.

The attendees were also invited to add to their notes More Commentary on ADA Compliance Issues, which is reported separately from the outline of this page. The lists below focus only on responses to the first half of the Danger in the Construction Zone instructions.

  1. To achieve resolution or greater understanding of ADA Compliance Issues,
WHAT DO WE NEED TO LEARN?

    Summary:

    • We need to learn exactly what the phrases "accessibility" and "ADA compliance" mean and imply in the web environment -- legally, technically, and contextually, for both the developer and the user.
    • We need to learn how to incorporate these features into existing web sites.
    • We need to learn whether, how much, and/or how well current college philosophies, procedures and developments already address these issues.

[Note that More Commentary on ADA Compliance Issues includes responses to some of the questions asked below.]

    Transcriptions of Conference Notes:

    • [Multiple] We need to learn more about definition of ADA compliance and how to be compliant.
    • [Multiple] How much will ADA compliance cost, and how do we weigh the costs against the benefits?
    • [Multiple] What is the minimum ADA compliance? Is there a level of compliance or must the pages be 100%?
    • [Multiple] What are the tools for determining ADA compliance and how do we use them?
    • [Multiple] We need to learn how to view sites through the "eyes" of disabled persons and address their needs.
    • [Multiple] We need to confirm via legal counsel whether ADA (Sec. 508) actually applies to us.
    • [Learn the] percentage of students that fall into this category.
    • [Learn] better definition/standards for defining access.
    • What is the purpose/audience of a web page?
    • What will affect ADA design?
    • Is there a more accurate term than "ADA compliant" to cover all the issues of accessibility?
    • Need to learn goals and values of [the] institution.
    • What resources are available [for the] economically disabled [and] at risk? ...How many students have/can afford computers to handle new software/hardware upgrades?
    • What timelines and resources are required?
    • Do Disability Resources people have the knowledge to educate or give resources how to be ADA compliant?
    • What about WAP technology? Can our webs be read on a 3" screen? On a cell phone?
    • How compliant are our college/department sites?
    • Does ADA noncompliance affect the federal funding for our community colleges?
    • Will financial aid also be affected if community colleges are deemed noncompliant?
