Fair Use Issues
This topic, as part of the Danger in the Construction Zone session of WebDev 2000, addressed the following opposing points of view:
Priority of Legal Issues vs. Priority of Educational Issues
First, a debate was presented by Larry Bohlender and Karen Schwalm, both GCC English faculty.
- Larry argued for the Priority of Legal Issues, or, the adherence to copyright law without exceptions.
- Karen defended the Priority of Educational Issues, or, the practice of faculty duplicating copyrighted materials (anything from articles to cartoons) to share on-line and in the classroom without the expense in time and money demanded of acquiring legal permission to do so.
As in all of the Danger debates, the presenters were not necessarily arguing their own personal points of view. Their priority was to inform the audience of the opposite sides of this issue, through extemporaneous speech and role playing.
Following the presentation, the attendees were asked to discuss and compose "calls to action" that would lead to the resolution or to greater understanding of this issue.
