Commercial Portals
This topic, as part of the Danger in the Construction Zone session of WebDev 2000, addressed the following opposing points of view:
Fiscal Responsibility vs. Privacy of Students
First, a debate was presented by KC Hundere, Director of GCC Network Services, and Karen Schwalm, Director of GCC Innovation Center.
- KC explained the Fiscal Responsibility benefits of striking deals in favor of "portal" products: Commercial firms are willing to provide both the hardware and software required for Maricopa to offer its students the latest of this technology made to deliver each person's customized Internet needs, such as e-mail, college student services, and favorite links to the outside world.
- Karen defended the Privacy of Students at risk in such systems: Can we justify the cost of giving outside commercial entities access to our students' e-mail accounts, and allow them to track our students' Internet activity for targeted advertising, in conflict with the guidelines we must follow for our own web site designs?
As in all of the Danger debates, the presenters were not necessarily arguing their own personal points of view. Their priority was to inform the audience of opposite sides of this issue, through extemporaneous speech and role playing.
Following the presentation, the attendees were asked to discuss and compose "calls to action" that would lead to the resolution or to greater understanding of this issue.
