WebDev 2001 & MCLI Technology Dialogue Day

Expectations of the Participants

As attendees arrived for the event, signed in, and conversed over breakfast, members of the planning team handed out index cards and asked participants to take a minute to jot down their expectations for the day. It may be interesting to compare these points of view to the followup evaluations summarized in the Closing the Loop section. But more importantly, a review of these notes might provide a helpful perspective in the planning of future events of this kind.

Shared Expectations:
Where the notes of multiple participants, paraphrased, express points in common; some ideas overlap each other

  • I expect to learn about how instructors are using technology/web development to create an effective learning environment / improve student learning [17 notes]
  • I expect to "network" between campuses: meet contacts that can help me with various web problems; listen to the people behind the technology and connect in a personal way [12 notes]
  • I expect to learn about ways to use the Web and web-delivered programs more effectively; new web techniques in general [10 notes]
  • I expect to gather/bring back ideas -- problems and solutions in general [8 notes]
  • I expect to learn about other people's/campuses' experiences with web programs; what they're doing on the Web, in general [8 notes]
  • I expect to learn about how to communicate better/ technology for communication, in general [5 notes]
  • I expect to learn about how to create and publish a web site and links, at the introductory level [4 notes]
  • I expect to learn about how others are handling distance learning and web-based course delivery [4 notes]
  • I expect free food [3 notes]
  • I expect to learn about "neat"/"cool" new stuff in general [3 notes]
  • I expect to learn about information to help increase my knowledge and ability to improve my department/college web site design [3 notes]
  • I expect to learn about the successes of on-line courses; how do we know we have succeeded? [2 notes]
  • I expect to learn about easier ways/templates for developing web sites [2 notes]
  • I expect to learn about how technology/web will change in coming years, in order to prepare to use emerging technologies [2 notes]
  • I hope to learn more about District/college Web requirements/guidelines [2 notes]

Unique Notes:
Expressions that were not an obvious fit in the above summaries.

  • [I expect to learn] innovative ways of gathering information from web sites.
  • Surprise me!
  • [I expect] to make educators realize that distance learning courses are counted on by people with disabilities to provide a barrier-free opportunity for education. Classes (some at Rio) who use RealPlayer to provide instruction/information without a text-only alternative violate these students' rights to higher, equal education. These pages were not built with disabilities in mind.
  • No great agenda, just to impress the idea that there are many approaches, abilities, accomplishments, and that we all should be valued for what we contribute and aspire to.
  • SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely) metrics that successful school IT shops use to correlate FTSE to HTML.
  • I wanted vodka to accompany the orange juice.
  • Increase job security, wages, etc. for tech staff -- need to be paid higher and create our own employee group.
  • What are current structures of web management at all the MCCCD campuses? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each?
  • I hope to obtain info for my dissertation, which is on educational technology in the community colleges.
  • How will the WWW be incorporated with the "new" SIS?
  • I expect to learn how I can take information from a database, and create a fully functional portal that my users will get the most benefit from.
  • Learn more about forms.
  • Talks from the Chancellor.
  • The latest information regarding what the district is, or going to do [with] audience feedback.
  • I hope to test my web site this afternoon.
  • I expect to enjoy myself, from what I've heard.
  • I expect to learn more about...ADA compliance.
Participants' notes were paraphrased as much as possible, albeit through a subjective process, to make this page convenient to read. The "unfiltered" transcription of all the participants' notes is also available as a Word document.
